Comparison SBS to chromo board

Comparison SBS to chromo board

We would like to tell you something about the materials we use. Because these are really extraordinarily top! We print as our standard material a symbol cardboard of the Italian luxury paper manufacturer Fedrigoni, which impresses with its extraordinary whiteness, the semi-matte coated surface on one side, the high stiffness and its brilliant color reproduction. The thickness of the material is 360g/m², which means that one square meter sheet of this material weighs exactly 360 grams. Due to its homogeneous surface structure, the cardboard is very robust, and is suitable for small and large packaging. Moreover, the cardboard we print is FSC certified, 100% degradable and even food grade. Symbol Card's CIE whiteness is 138 +/-5 for the coated side and 140 +/-5 for the uncoated side (according to ISO 2470). So the bottom line is: our packaging board is bright white and smooth (slightly rough inside), FSC certified and super strong! What more could you want?

You'd rather have everything in black and white? No problem! Write us an e-mail and we will send you our certificates.

The properties of our cardboard at a glance

  1. The material is about 0.435 mm thick
  2. FSC certified and 100% biodegradable
  3. CIE whiteness is 138 +/-5 for the coated side and 140 +/-5 for the uncoated side
  4. The material is white on both sides

Comparison of Chromokarton and Symbol Cardboard (data sheet)

If we compare the frequently used chromosulfate cardboard (GC) with our Symbol Cardboard, we can see the enormous differences based on a few facts:

MaterialSymbol CardChromo board
Grammage360g/m²350g/m²
Whiteness13589
Bending stiffness (mN)400374

So let's keep in mind: the SBS board is whiter (especially also inside), heavier and has a higher bending stiffness than a chromo board. Another advantage is the 100% degradability of the material and pulp, as well as the food safety towards the material.

The Symbol Card board compared to the chromo board

Comparison Chromo Cardboard Symbol CardDue to the fact that our most commonly used packaging cardboard Symbol Card (SBS) by Fedrigoni is made of pure cellulose, there are numerous advantages compared to other cardboard boxes used by many other manufacturers. One major difference is the Base color of the material. While the Symbol Card comes with an extremely white appearance on the outside and inside, when compared with the chromosulfate board, one sees a slightly yellowish tint on the outside and inside. This has the effect that printing colors are displayed differently than on a very white background (see photo).

You can find more advantages in the table shown above.

The Symbol Card carton compared to the GD2 carton

Comparison chromo board GD2

Packaging and folding boxes are also frequently made from GD2 cardboard. This cardboard is very inexpensive, but has a dark, rough surface on the inside. The outside of the carton is also not bright white and thus probably distorts the print image. The whiteness between our cardboard and GD2 is enormous, see picture.
